Description

In this lesson the learners will read a passage and try to find out how the paragraphs in a text get connected to each other. since the text has been written in chronological order they can use these clues to identify the cohesion in the text. They will also practice how to guess the meaning of a word from the context.

Materials

Abc U2, pp 18-19, reading ex 1-5 and WB, p 9, vocabulary 1a, Global series

Main Aims

  • The main is reading and learnig how to guess the meaning of unknown words from the text and also to identify cohesion in a text.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The subaim includes some speaking on/about the passage in a rather controlled way and to practice some vocabulary items.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will set the lesson with some questions to activate what they remember from the school and build the lesson on. They will talk about some theories to get to the main part.They then connect some words with their definitions. At the end of this stage they will be shown some words to match with the new words they just explored. These questions can be as follows: Do you know any scientific theories? How many famous scientists, alive or dead, can you name? Do you think the world needs more science and scientists?Why? What kind of people would have been against science, in the past? Why?

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

They will be given a passage to skim and connect the paragraphs to each other. This part can be done either individually or in pairs.

Reading Stage (5-9 minutes) • To read the passage and explore it in more details.

They will read the text and try to find answers to some pre-set questions. They will also scan the text to find the meaning from the context.They will be given definitions and try to match the definitions with the new words and expressions.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The learners will have time to practice speaking in pairs and provide a short summary on the passage using the new words they have learned.

Workbook • to make sure that they have understood the words

If time permits they will be given a piece of their workbook to do. This phase is done to refresh the words before the end of the lesson.
