Description

In this lesson, students learn about new vocabulary about towns and giving directions through guided listening activities. The lesson starts with a discussion about giving directions. The lesson continues with giving names to places in a town and finding addresses in a town using a map provided by teacher. The lesson continues with a guided listening activity and it finishes with a free speaking activity of giving directions in pairs.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students work in pairs to decide whether this town is in Turkey or not by looking at the map provided by the teacher. They share ideas as an open class activity. They give their ideas by completing the sentences on the board. ' We think this town is in Turkey because ....................' or ' We don't think this town is in Turkey because ..........................'

Focus on Vocabulary (11-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening activity and make it accessible

In exercise Vocabulary1, students match the names with the places on the map and they peer check before they share their answers with the teacher. In exercise Vocabulary2, they work in pairs to do the exercise and compare their answers with the pairs / groups closest to theirs. One student from each group / pair shares their answer with the class. In exercise Vocabulary3, students share their answers with the teacher as an open class activity.

Pre-Listening (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening activity and to collect some ideas before the listening stage

Students look at the picture of the people at the train station and think about the questions the teacher asks. ' Where are they? ', ' Do they know each other? ', ' Why are they at the station? ', ' Why are the men wearing the same scarf?', ' What do you think is happening?'. Teacher neither comments about the answers nor corrects them.

While-Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening task

Students listen to the recording once and choose the correct words to complete the sentences. They compare their answers in pairs and then as an open class activity.

While-Listening #2 (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Students listen to the recording again, if needed twice, and they follow Mary's directions on the map. Students compare their answers in pairs and share answers with the teacher.

Free Practice (12-13 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the language and expand on what they've learned

Students change groups and give directions to each other for their favourite restaurant or cafés and they produce the target language in this free speaking activity.
