In this lesson Ss will read an extract from an article about e-mails .Then they will listen to a conversation between two men discussing the outcome of banning intranet in company offices .The Ss will follow this up with a discussion to prepare for a debate on this subject.


Abc Reading text , CD , HO with written questions and two photos from the course book.

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency in discussing an issue in the context of banning mobile phones/Mp3 in the work place

Pre-reading (3-5 minutes) • Preparing Ss for the text

T sticks four questions on the WB and asks Ss to discuss in pairs . In FB T asks who sends and receives the most e-mails in class

Reading for main idea (Gist) (8-10 minutes) • To give practice in reading for Gist

T shows Ss the cover of the book to give them an idea of what they are going to read about.Then T will group Ss in four and asks Ss to read individually and quickly and answer the questions in the HO .T asks ICQs before handing out the material. T takes an answer from each group for FB .

Listening for main idea (8-10 minutes) • To give Ss practice in listening for gist

T shows pictures of Graham & Deniz .T asks Ss where do they work ? T asks Ss if they know the meaning of the words (firm & ban) ?T tells Ss that there are going to listen to a conversation between the two men and answer two questions .In pairs Ss check their answers .Then T gives Ss script to check their answers.

Speaking task (18-20 minutes) • To Practice speaking for fluency

T groups Ss into groups A and B . T explains an activity were both groups work in a company that is banning the use of mobile phones in the office .Group A is against the ban & group B is for the ban.T asks Ss to prepare for a discussion where each group gives reasons for their opinion.T helps Ss while they are planning by writing some task vocabulary they might need on the WB. After Ss are prepared regroup them so Ss from A will debate with Ss from B.T monitors by listening to the language used by students .FB will be to correct any mistakes in language used .
