Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn about the differences between men and women's brains by reading a text about gender gaps in the brain. Ss will use the information they read to discuss the things they agree or disagree with. and then after the main aim is completed, Ss will learn some related vocabulary and their definitions .

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in the integrated skills of reading for gist and details, and speaking fluency in the context of gender.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce related vocabulary.

Procedure

(warmer) (3-5 minutes) • to engage Ss to the topic of the lesson.

Engage the Ss by asking them to read the title and describing the pictures on pages 40/41. Ask if Ss think men and women are better in different things.

(Lean In) (4-6 minutes) • to introduce the lesson and make the context of the lesson clear.

Put Ss into pairs and tell them to discuss the question. Ex. 1, pg.40. Give Ss a few minutes to do the activity and check answers as a whole class.

(Reading for gist) (5-7 minutes) • To get Ss to read quickly and get the main ideas of the text.

Put Ss into pairs. Introduce the text, give them a few minutes to discuss and a few more minutes to read quickly and check their answers. Ex. 2, pg.40. Check answers as a whole class.

(Reading for details) (7-9 minutes) • To get Ss to focus on the information given in the text.

Ask Ss to work individually.Tell them to read the text again and underline the sections that give the information. Ask ICQ's to clarify any misunderstanding. (Are men and women's brains the same weight?) (Can men do different things at the same time better than women?) (According to researches, Where do these differences begin? in the womb? in the childhood?) Put Ss in pairs to check their answers. Ex.3, pg.40.

(controlled practice) (4-6 minutes) • To make sure Ss get the important information from the text.

Put Ss into pairs. Explain that guessing meaning from context is an important skill. Ask Ss to guess the meaning of the given words and phrases from the text, without looking. at their dictionaries. Ex.4, pg.40. Monitor and help if necessary.

(Speaking) (4-6 minutes) • To get Ss to practice the things they read in the text.

Put Ss in small groups. Allow time to discuss the questions in Ex.5, pg40. Make sure they explain their opinions and ask each other questions, Monitor and help if necessary.

(vocabulary) (4-6 minutes) • To practice using vocabulary

Put Ss into pairs and ask them to match the adjectives with their definitions. Ex.1, pg.41. Elicit or give example sentences if necessary. ( we talked about /sympathetic/ people in the previous lesson, can you tell me what does this adjective mean? ). Hand out the answers for Ss to check.

(If time allows activity)

In small groups get Ss to discuss the sentences in Ex.2, pg41. Monitor and help with any language they need to change the sentences,
