Description

In this lesson students have a reading for gist to be familiar with the vocabulary in the context of achievement and also the lesson focuses on speaking fluency in the mentioned context. They have guess work, gist reading, speaking and learning related vocabulary but the lesson mainly focuses on fluency and gist reading. Finally they should be able to do the exercises on their own and to speak fluently using the terminology on achievement.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate using a reading (gist) in the context of achievements

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of achievement words in the context of achievement

Procedure

Warm up. (7-10 minutes) • To engage students by prediction and make them ready for the context.

I am going to talk about achievements famous people had and then ask them to look at the title and pictures to guess what the people in the pictures have achieved, in this part I am going to give them the pictures only, if they have them with the text, they may look at the text to get some information. at this stage I can pre-teach the new vocabulary ( prodigy, supergran and prestigious ) according to the procedure MFP ( Meaning, Form and Pronunciation)

Presentation (10-12 minutes) • To have them more engaged by reading their part in groups.

I am going to put students in groups of 5 giving them each a paragraph to read and expressing a summerise of the person's achievement to the other people in their group. They are being monitored while they speak in case they need help.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To have them work individually, check the meaning of new vocabulary and speaking more.

Students work individually to do exercise 3 and check the meaning of the words in bold in case of having time they work in pairs to swap information and their ideas in full sentences. They will be monitored for help if necessary.

Speaking. (12-15 minutes) • Free practice, fluency and to get feedback.

Ask the question in exercise 4b to the whole class, then put them in pairs to discuss encouraging them to give opinions and use the new vocabulary they learnt.
