Description

In this lesson I will present new vocabulary to students and do a reading exercise as well as going through questions to do with this. Students will practice their reading skills through skimming and scanning. The context of the lesson is tourism and travel, and I will try to link this context to their personal experiences.

Materials

Abc Hand out with exercises and the reading text

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan for specific information in the context of tourism.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of holiday words in the context of travel and tourism

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will begin by reminding the students of the previous lesson that they had with Claire where they used comparatives to compare cities. First I will explain that they will talk to each other about their favourite city in the world that they have visited. I will give an example that my favourite city is Istanbul and say why. I will tell them to do the same and check that they understood with ICQs. They will stand up mingle with each other while I monitor them for 3 minutes.

Vocabulary (7-9 minutes) • To clarify vocabulary relating to the text sts will read and check their understanding

To help students learn the new vocab I will adopt the test-teach-test approach. I will introduce the vocab through setting the students the task first. Then I will divide them into pairs. I will chest the HO and explain the first task. Students will then have 4 minutes to match the sentences to the pictures in pairs. Students will then be given an answer key and I will check their understanding through CCQs. Then I will drill the vocabulary with them to help with their pronunciation.

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will introduce the cities Barcelona and Prague by writing them on the WB. I will ask students if they have ever been to those cities and ask them what they know about them. They will discuss this in pairs for 2 minutes. Then I will promptly continue by sticking pictures of and relating to the cities spread around on the WB while they are discussing in pairs. After 2 minutes I will demo the next task in which I will ask students to stand up and place the picture under the city they think it belongs to. 3 minutes to do this task.

While-Reading/Listening #1- Reading for gist (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

Through chesting I will show students the text and the activity. I will explain that they should read the text quickly and fill in the phrases in the task. They do not need to read every word but only find what they need to know. I will check understanding through ICQs. I will give sts the HO and tell them they have 3 minutes to finish the activity. Then I will ask them to compare answers with the person sitting next to them and WCFB.

While-Reading/Listening #2 - Scanning (8-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading for specific information task

In this task students will be scanning the text for specific information about Barcelona and Prague. I will explain the task through chesting the HO and doing the first question together as a WC. I will give sts the HO and tell them they have 5 minutes to finish the task. I will give them a answer key and then ask if they have any questions.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will now discuss whether or not they know Barcelona or Prague. They will discuss whether or not they would like to visit these cities for a weekend break. They can also discuss where they would like to visit for a holiday and why. They will discuss this in their pairs. - I will start by asking them if they know Barcelona and Prague now. -Then I will explain that I would like to visit Barcelona but I would not like to go to Prague. I will say I would like to go to Barcelona because it is a nice city, I want to learn to speak Spanish, I like Spanish food. I don't want to go to Prague because it is cold there, I don't want to see the city's sites, I don't enjoy the Czech food and it is expensive. -Drilling I would like to go/ I wouldn't like to go. (write on WB) -Then I will tell students to discuss these questions and say why they would/wouldn't like to visit these cities. -5 minutes to discuss in pairs
