In this lesson students are going to learn about optimism and pessimism. Through out discussions and a jigsaw reading they are going to be able to answer questions like: "Are most people optimistic or pessimistic?" and "would you describe yourself as a pessimistic or an optimistic person?"

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in the integrated skills of reading for specific information and detail and also speaking for fluency in the context of optimism.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of Meaning from context in the context of Optimism & Pessimism

Procedure

Video "Optimism & Pessimism" • Warm-up

The class is going to watch a video based on "Optimism & Pessimism" in order to get the idea of the lesson.

All's well that ends well • To find out If most people are optimistic or pessimistic

Speaking They will work in pairs talking about "Are most people optimistic or pessimistic?" after that they are suppose to read the text quickly(skimming) and find out whether they were right or wrong. Then they have to talk in pairs and decide whether they consider themselves as pessimistic person or an optimistic person.

Jigsaw Reading • Specific info/details

The class will be divided into two groups A & B. They will read about two people who answer the question "what are you optimistic about?". Then in their group they are going to check their answers.

Jigsaw Reading- Speaking • Discussion

They will change their partners and they will tell each other about the person they read about.

Matching Handout • Understand the meaning of a word based on the context

The students will try to match the vocabularies and the definitions which I give them in their pairs or groups.

Speaking • To take a general FB

They will discuss in pairs or small groups to answer this question "What idea do both answers have in common?"
