Description

In this lesson, gradable and non-gradable adjectives will be presented to students, and they will practice the pronounciation of those adjectives. They will follow this up with speaking, using those adjectives with adverbs in the provided situation.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of gradable and non-gradable adjectives using ppt slides

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of emotions in dramatic situations

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To relate vocabulary stage with the reading stage

T will show the picture of skydiving with a sentence from reading on the PPT slide, and ask Ss where thay have seen that sentence. T will present adverb+adjective structure through the same sentence.

Stage 2 (3-5 minutes) • To explain the difference between gradable and non-gradable adjectives.

Ss will look at the slide which firstly illustrates the meaning of gradable adjectives and then highlights non-gradable ones. Ss will also be introduced to adverbs which are used with each group of adjectives.

Stage 3 (2-3 minutes) • To elicit intonation

Ss give their opinions about skydiving using correct intonation

Stage 4 (2-3 minutes) • To beware Ss not to use degrees of adjectives with non-gradable group.

Ss will look at the picture of thermometer and understand that no degree is needed with extreme adjectives.

Stage 5 (2-3 minutes) • To introduce new adjectives

Ss will look at the pictures describing 7 adjectives and will try to memorise them.

Stage 6 (2-3 minutes) • To check whether Ss remember non-gradable adjectives.

Every St will individually try to find non-gradable forms of the adjectives on the slide.

Stage 7 (8-10 minutes) • To practice new adjectives

1. T will distribute 20 adjectives cards and Ss in A group will find gradable adjectives, while Ss in B group will identify non-gradable ones. 2. Ss will mingle and as a whole class will match adjectives. 3. Ss will stick adjectives on the board under the category of adverbs they are used with.

Stage 8 (1 minutes) • To introduce the topic of dramatic situations

Ss will look at the picture of roller coaster and try to guess how people feel when they go on one.

Speaking (5-8 minutes) • To use previously learned adjectives and adverbs in the context of dramatic situations

Ss will look at the list of situations and ask any unfamiliar vocabulary. Then, Ss in pairs choose one situation from the slide and discuss with their partner how they felt when they experienced it. One person from each pair describes his or his partner's feelings using useful language box.
