In this lesson, students will learn about how and what questions.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of how and what questions in the context of speaking to new neighbours.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Introduction (3-5 minutes) • Briefly re-introduce myself to the class

Indicate my name to the students and how are they feeling today. What color is my t-shirt?

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I am going to talk about how and what questions. I am going to stick on famous Turkish artist's Picture on the white board and I am going to ask Do you know her? ''HOW POPULAR IS SHE?'' How many children does she have? How old is Turkan Soray?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

What kinds of words ''WHAT ''and ''HOW'' these question words combine with. Students will complete the questions for the answers below from the book page 11.

Productive Task(s) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students will work in pairs. Ask and answer the questions in exercise 1.

Productive Task(s) (8-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students will write four questions that they would like to ask. What time...? What kind of...? How much...? How many....? How old...?

Useful Language (8-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I am going to stick on a house picture on the white board and I am also going to put four famous people from Turkey. Then I am going to ask students a good and bad neighbour with their answers. Would you like to live next door to Burak Ozcivit? Why/ why not?
