Description

In this lesson, students get to practice listening for gist, specific information and detail in the context of genealogy. The lesson starts with a lead-in activity about a German national player who is originally from Turkey and about his family's tree. This is followed by a gist listening activity where students predict answers to some questions. After that they will listen for more specific information but before that they will get to learn some new words that are used in the audio. Finally there is a language review where students get to brush up their grammar and then they will have a freer activity about their family tree.

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in listening for gist, specific information and detail in the context of genealogy.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and give students practice in present tenses/simple, perfect and continuous.

Procedure

Lead in (6-8 minutes) • To do some warm up and get the students to discuss their family tree and may be history.

-Students are given a picture of a famous German national player who is originally from Turkey. They are then asked questions about his family and ancestors. -Teacher draws the player's family tree then students are the asked to draw theirs.

Prediction/Gist (6-8 minutes) • To practice listening for gist and and also activate their minds to predict answers.

-Students listen for 10 seconds to the audio then try to predict what is the problem according to the speaker and what does she suggest. - Students then in small groups will listen to the audio and answer the same questions. After they listen they have to check their answers to see if their predictions were right. This is done in small groups. Teacher take whole class feedback

Pre-teach Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To get students to learn some new words that they will hear later in the audio.

Teacher will use some pictures and strips of paper to elicit the meaning of some words. Students will get in groups of four to guess the meaning of the words that are presented.

Specific information/detail (6-8 minutes) • To get students to practice how to listen for specific information

Students think of two ways to research their family history (pair work) Students then listen to the audio at least two times and see if they have got the same ideas as those suggested in the audio. They then check with their peers. Teacher elicit feedback from the students

Language review (5-7 minutes) • To help students revise the present tenses.

Students will work in small groups on exercise 1 on page number 9. Students will then will continue up to exercise 2 on the same page. Teacher will elicit and check if there is any question or problem.

Personalization (5-7 minutes) • To get students to do some speaking related to the topic that has been discussed before.

Teacher will ask general question about family tree and history. Students will talk about their family trees and may be their origins.
