Beginners, A1, 10 years old level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about demonstrative adjectives. The lesson starts with a speaking activity about objects displayed in the class. This is followed by a language analysis of the target language. The lesson continues with controlled and semi controlled practice activities of the target language.

Materials

Abc HO
Abc Monsters pictures
Abc Flags-pencil case objects Flashcards

Main Aims

  • to provide clarification of meaning, form and pronunciation of demonstrative adjectives and give controlled and semi-controlled practice in the context of describing objects around us (classroom environment)

Subsidiary Aims

  • to provide speaking practice of the target language

Procedure

Class routine (2-3 minutes) • Classroom arrangement (seating, register, light/temperature)

1 Greet the Ss. Make sure all Ss can see the WB/Teacher, if necessary change their seating arrangement 2 Check the class register 3 Make sure the room is comfortable (enough light, not too hot/cold)

Warm up (6-8 minutes) • to set lesson context and engage Ss through a low-stress/familiar class activity

"What colour is this flag?" - (pointing at it) "What colour is that pencil near the computer?" T revises flags' colours and pencil case objects placed near and across the room. Encourage all the students to speak until everyone has had a turn (10 visuals around the classroom) Using gestures and mime T points at a chair near her and says `this chair`, then points at a chair across the room and says `that chair`. T repeats with other items. At this point Ss will have understood that we use "this" for `close` objects, "that" for objects further away. (A visual helps understanding "near" and "far").

Presentation (10-12 minutes) • to introduce the new language

1 Listen to and watch "Body Parts Chant" to find out the plural form of "this". T asks Ss to help her write the plural form on the WB 2 T guides Ss to understanding the demonstratives' meaning and form (language analysis) 3 T drills pronunciation and sentence stress

Practice Activity 1 (6-8 minutes) • to practise the new language

1 Language practice exercises: a. circle the correct words b. complete the dialogue c. write Maria`s words (HO). Answer key on the WB, checked in pairs, WC

Practice Activity 2 (7-9 minutes) • to practise the new language in less controlled practice activities

1 T displays 4 monsters in different parts of the room. T reads a description and Ss guess what monster she is describing. "This monster has got ...feet; ...eyes; ...hands 2 T asks one S to describe another monster and the others guess. (the previous one) "This monster has got ... That monster hasn`t got... "
