TP1 / listening / present simple
Elementary level


Students learn about present simple tense starting with an audio.The audio is based on real and personal information in present simple.This is going to be followed by practicing the students on listening via answering relevant questions to what they have already listened to. After that the grammar part starts by the following steps: reviewing the personal pronouns,concentrating on third person pronouns,eliciting verbs , creating sentences , practicing simple present with all the possible ways.accompanied by doing the exercises.


Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the present simple tense in the context of personal facts
  • to introduce / review and give controlled practice of present simple positive and negative through the context of expats and lifestyles

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide deduction listening practice using a text about personal life in the context of name,work,city
  • listening ,speaking,verb and noun collocations.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First of all, greeting the students, good morning, hope you're doing well. Then, ask them to make a circle and do some exercises with them like shake your shoulders , raise your hands....etc. later on, ask them what are the most important information that they would like to know about someone they have got to know him/her recently . ex; what's his/her name? where does he/she live ? where is he/she from ?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ask the students what do they prefer to listen to , is it English songs, Turkish songs, radio programs,or news? then tell them that they are going to listen to something different now called dialogue. So, teacher is going o tell them to open their ears and eyes very well to concentrate more.Before listening They will be given sheets about the dialogue to underline the correct information that they are going to hear.This part of listening questions will be checked chorally.Later on students are going to listen to the same audio one more time to check the sentences if they are true or false . This part of listening will be checked by clapping game , if the answer is true , students are going to clap once , if the answer is false the students are going to clap twice.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Starting the target language by reviewing the personal pronouns as the following example : Teacher is going to ask what is my name ? my name is Rana. so, i am Rana.Then start pointing to the students to get to the aim e.g she is Sevde, he is Ahmet, we are in the ITI center, they are teachers,you are students,it is a computer.Emphasizing on third persons pronouns that they are fond of letter s. as in has, is, does and s with action verbs. Acting a short play about he,she and it and their relation with S.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

At the beginning i will be having some flashcards , showing pictures of a house , a flat , coffee, milk,a hamburger, a dog, a cat, a newspaper, books, and the words English, French, Turkish and Arabic . Teacher is going to add some changes to these cards and hold each one up and talk about it , on consequence she is going to ask students to have their own sentences. Finally write the structure of the sentence on the board as Subject,verb,object/noun/etc. Trying to apply this knowledge on grammar exercise from the book 1/p23. checking this one will be done reciprocally each student is going to pass his paper to his friend to be checked ,but they will be given the sheet with answers after they finish.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In this step ,Students are going to be grouped by gender to start the miming game students are going to give the teacher verbs , action verbs to be mimed by her Then each one is going to act a verb and his friends are going to guess the correct sentence and get stars for his team.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

students now are going to practice negative and positive sentences related to a picture of a woman . They are going to construct sentences using the correct verbs.After that they are going to be grouped into two teams depending on their gender then they are going to answer grammar exercise 2/ p 23 four questions for each group. questions will be checked immediately.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

the last step is going to be done by the last piece of worksheet individually , later on students are going to discuss it with their friends as a pair work. A present for home is going to be a sheet from their workbook after explaining what they are going to do with it .
