Teaching Practice 1
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will review and extend their awareness of the use of future forms- will, going to, present continuous and present simple through a listening activity to model the target language. Then, there is a grammar focus part where ss need to figure out the rules with the help of sentences from the recording. After that, ss need to do a gap fiiling activity to practice what they have learned. This is followed by a pair work activity in which ss thiink and talk about the dialogues in the previous activity.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of use of will, be going to, present simple and present continous in the future form. in the context of future expectations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice in listenning for gist and specific information through a recording about people talking about their expectations of the future.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • to make ss listen for gist

T asks Ss they will listen to five people answering the question "What are you optimistic about?". while listening, ss will complete a chart about what the people in the recording are saying. While ss listen, T draws the chart on board. After the listening finishes, T nominates different ss to come to board and complete the chart.

Specific Information/detail (5-8 minutes) • to make ss understand the listening text in detail

T asks Ss to divide into pairs and let them do the T/F activity to see if they remember the listening text correctly. Then, T plays the recording and Ss decide whether the statements are T or F. After Ss have finished, T gets FB from Ss.

Personalisation (8-10 minutes) • to make Ss personalize with what they have learned in the listening part

T tells Ss that they have listened to people talking about things they are optimistic or pessimistic. For each speaker, T tries to elicit a heading. For example; since first speaker is optimistic about his retirement, the heading will be retirement. Then, T asks Ss to discuss in pairs if they are optimistic about any of the topics.

Language Focus (8-10 minutes) • To review future forms

T focuses Ss attention to the sentences extracted from the listening. T reads the sentences and asks them if these sentences are talking about things happened in the past or will happen in the future. Then, T asks Ss to complete the rules with the forms in brackets as pairs. Then, T elicits the answers from the Ss and write a chart on W/B to make the differences clearer for the Ss.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To give Ss the oppurtunity to practice the TL

T asks Ss to do the gap filling exercise in Grammar Part 2 in pairs. Then, T gets FB.

Optional Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • to extend Ss awareness of future forms

T asks Ss to match the dialogues in Part 5 in pairs. Then, T gets FB.
