Main Aims

  • To improve students' listening skills

Subsidiary Aims

  • To teach some vocabulary related to the topic
  • To practice adverb of frequency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introducing the topic 'New Year' : - Show sts some pictures of New Year celebrations and ask them what kind of celebration it is. - After eliciting the topic; tell them about what you think of NY by using present simple tense. I like NY, because I visit my friends/ I spend time with my family/ I eat nice foods/ I sometimes go out - Write "I like NY, because...." and "I don't like NY, because...." on the WB. They fill the gap by making sentences in pairs and talk about their partners

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Introducing the characters of the listening task; Min and Paul: - Look at the photos (Pg.28, Unit 3.2) and elicit the words " sunrise, firework, traditional, midnight and chess" through the pictures. eg. Where are they in the first picture? -What are they watching?- Do they do it every year? -which city do you think the second pic is? -What are the lights called? etc..

While Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Set task for getting the gist of the record -Give them the instruction: Does Min like NY? Does Paul like NY? and play the record 1.34 - Listen to Min's interview first and ask sts whether she likes it or not. If they didn't understand it play the specific part again. Do the same for Paul's interview.

While Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Set task for more detailed listening -Give them the HOs of questions about the conversation which was adapted by me, where they have to circle the correct answers. -Each student has got one minute to read the questions. -Play the record for the class for the second time. -They work with their partners to check their answers after listening the record. -Check their answers with the whole class and if there is time play the record for the last time.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Write the adverbs of frequency on the WB and tell them to find these words in the text. Give the HOs of the record to each student. - Ask ICQ to check if they understood the task. eg. Are you looking for the word New Year/ firework? (Y/N) - While sts are busy with this task, draw a scale on the WB indicating only never and always on it and also write some sentences from the text Never(0%)------(50%) -------(70%) -----(90%) Always (%100) - Ask sts to tell me which words to write in the gaps.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To practice more about adverb of frequencies

-If there is any time left, write some sentences on the board eg. I read in bed/ I watch TV/ I have breakfast/ I drive to work/ I wake up before 6/ I eat salad for dinner etc -Ask learners round the class to add an adverb eg. I often read in bed/ I never watch TV etc -Alternatively they can talk about how often they do things in the context of NY with their partners. eg. I usually stay at home/ I sometimes go out with my friends.. -Get feedback by asking sts to tell about their partners.
