YLE-TP1: Months
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson the T is going to cover the months' and days' names. The Ss are going to receive controlled and freer practices of vocabulary. At the end of the lesson, the Ss are going to try their best to sing the song by The Cure, Friday I'm In Love.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of months and days in the context of time.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a song in the context of days.

Procedure

Lead-in/Presentation (5-8 minutes) • To draw Ss' attention to the forms, then clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language.

The T starts the lesson by writing some years on the board. After ensuring the Ss know the concept of "year" the T writes the months. Asking questions to the learners about what is their favourite month and why, the T gets 2 sentences from everyone. The Ss are paired and encouraged to talk to each other and have a little chat about the topic.

Focus on Form (8-12 minutes) • To prepare learners for more meaningful practice

Here in this stage the T gives importance on the form by delivering a handout. After the Ss finish the activity, the T gives the answers by simply using the OP.

Focus on Meaning and Pronunciation (5-8 minutes) • To provide the Ss with controlled practice of the target language.

The T now provides further practice by focusing on pronunciation. After the T's modeling, the Ss make repeated drilling.

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide the Ss with freer practice of the target language.

The T delivers the last handouts to provide a freer practice of the TL. The Ss are asked to write why do (or not) they love the relevant month. Later on, the Ss are told to stand up, walk around and mingle so that they can tell their ideas about the months to their friends.

Flexi-stage • To prepare learners for more cheerful practice

In this stage of the course the Ss are asked to sing along the song Friday I'm In Love by The Cure.
