To provide clarification of saying years in the context of famous people and to provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of childhood
To provide clarification and practice of saying years in the context of famous people with some receptive activities together with productive ones.
To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of childhood with speaking activities aimed to get sts to talk about their childhood with the help of some questions.
Procedure (35-46 minutes)
The teacher asks the date of that day. S/he makes a circle on WB and writes her name in the circle. She draws 3-4 arrows connected to the circle and gets sts to ask personal questions to the teacher so that it makes the introducing herself part more productive. When sts ask her birthday, she highligts how to say the year.
The teacher gives a HO which has some years together with how they are said. She gets sts to repeat the years. Then she gives a list of years, after modelling the first two, she gets sts to say them in pairs.
Teacher shows a ppt in which a picture of Atatürk comes up first. She asks who that person is. After eliciting the name, a sentence saying ‘Ataturk was born in 1881’ is shown on the ppt. She gets them to say the year. Teacher sets the first example with a well-known person to make the structure together with the year clear. Then she gets sts to write Atatürk next to the year 1881 on their previous list of year HO as they are going to use that list to guess when the upcoming famous people were born. Then a photo of another famous person is shown. After they are asked who that person is, a sentence saying ‘Ajda Pekkan was born ___ ______’ with a missing part is shown, teacher asks students to make guesses when she was born from the list of year. After eliciting the right answer, she gets sts to reapeat it as a sentence. She does the same thing with another famous person.
Starting with the fourth famous person on the ppt, she not olny asks sts to guess the year but also asks them to form the whole sentence. As ‘was born’ part is written in a different colour in the previous slides, it is highligted indirectly. She uses her fingers to show that they are supposed to say five words in total to form the sentence. Teacher does the same procedure with the other famous people to get them to practice not only saying the year but also ‘was born’ structure. After 7 famous people in total are practised in the same way, she just shows the photos of those famous people and gets them to say the whole sentences. On this stage, remembering the year is not going to be difficult since they will have written the names next to the year on their list.
Teacher shows a short text giving infomation about her childhood on the ppt. She reads it out loud and shows some questions about herself and then she gets sts to answer the questions.
T asks sts to ask the same questions to their partner after demonstrating the first example as there are some changes in the form of the question. Then she asks them to talk about their partners. She reminds them to use third singular personal pronoun in this task.
T asks the class to sit in a circle and then she whispers a year in a student's ear. That student must whisper it to the next student and so on round the circle. When the year gets back to the original student, they must tell the class whether they heard the same year as they started with.
