Main Aims

  • Scan and detailed reading practice using a text about socializing.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice as a reaction to a familiar topic that lends itself into a reflection on a global topic.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set context by asking ss about what they do when they go out with friends last. (check understanding of go out). Check the meaning of live music and Karaoke. Divide ss into groups of 3 and ask them to discuss ideas in EX 1. One ss form each group reports back to whole class,

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teach vocabulary necessary for understanding of the text and to do tasks. 1- applaud: use gesture to elicit the verb. Drill for pronunciation | əˈplɒd | then write. 2- ingredient: use picture to elicit word 3- Tone deaf: use video to Elicit word CCQ then write. 4- Unwind. Give a context situation to elicit the word. When I come home after a stressful day at work, I usually take a bath and .... relax/ unwind. CCQ to chack for understanding. Drill | əˈnwaɪnd | Write on the board, 5- Banned. Ask: Is smoking allowed at school? No, it is ... banned. 6- A dance craze. What do we call it when every one in the room starts dancing like no body is watching?

While-Reading/ (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Reading task EX 2 A- Introduce the article by writing the title on the board and ask ss to predict which activities from ex1 will it be about. Students scan the 1sr paragraph and see if they are right. B- Demonstrate then give ss phrases printed on slips of paper to stick on a projected table under the right category. Feedback

While-Reading/Listening #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

EX 3 - Ask ss to read through sentences first then pair them up. -Give ss 4 min to read and fill in the blanks individually and then check answers in pairs. Feedback: hang answer keys on the walls around the classroom.

Post-Reading (12-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

EX 5 ss discuss questions in small groups 3. They will be asked to talk to people they haven't worked with before. Go around monitoring and providing support. Take note of any problem areas especially related to TL and address them with whole group.
