Description

In this lesson, students learn about the past form of the verb "to be" through reading a magazine article about remakes in the context of movies. The lesson starts with a discussion about the pictures. This is followed by reading and grammar exercises.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher has already placed pictures on the WB to set the context and asks students what they represent and elicits from students that they are movies. In order to check the background information about the students, teacher gets the students ask each other these questions: Do you like films? What kind of films do you like? What's your favourite film? Then teacher gets some FB to check the answers.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Then, teacher asks students if they know the films on the WB and tries to get sts see the difference. "Original - remake" are the words to teach before reading the text. Do you know any other remakes? Let's look for more remakes! and teacher links the topic to the reading exercise. Students will be given a HO, which teacher will present through chesting before handing it to them, including matching pictures with the paragraphs in the article.

Reading - gist (1-2 minutes) • to have a quick look and skim the text

The students will be given 1 or 2 minutes to read the text and they try to match the pictures with the paragraphs in the magazine article. Teacher checks the answers.

Reading-scanning (3-5 minutes) • to read the text for the specific information

Students read the article again by scanning for more specific information and complete the sentences with the words from the text. Students check their answers with their partners.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher writes one sentence from the text on the WB. Write one or two other sentences as well to use as model sentences. She draws students' attention to the target language.

Clarification (3-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher uses the model sentences to clarify the meaning and ask students : Is it past or future? Am i a student now? etc... She points out the form and pronunciation on these sentences: It was cold. They were late. They were at home.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students complete the sentences with the correct form of the verb "to be" in the HO. Students work in pairs. Teacher checks the answers, corrects students' mistakes and gets WC FB.

Clarification (1-2 minutes) • to clarify the question form and help with the next exercise

Teacher clarifies and shows the question form through the model sentences that are already on the WB in order to prepare students for the following activity.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • to practice the grammar form and the vocabulary and provide accuracy in speaking

Teacher first explains how to do the activity and shows a demo with a student. Teacher gives the handouts and students mingle and ask questions each other. Were you............at home yesterday/ fat when you were a baby......etc. and teacher gets some FB.
