Description

In this lesson Ss will learn about compund nouns in the context of friendship and they will practice it through reading text "Holiday Heaven". They will learn some new compund nouns and at the end of the lesson they will be able to use them actively in a discussion activity.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

 show the photo of you and your friend and point to yourself and ask " Who is she?" appendix 1  point to your friend ans ask : " Who is she?" (get the answer 'friend')  What does friend mean to you? (just one word ) sibling, everything, shoulder ...  see appendix 2 ....show number 2- means "together"  say.. If two or more people comes together and they have fun, they like the same kind of things, we call it ........ (wait for the answer) ..Yesss, we call it "friend"  put the word " friend" in your pocket.

Presentation/clarification (8-10 minutes) • by the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to understand the form,meaning and pronunciation of compound nouns.

 appendix ... introduce the words to the class in pieces. ( police / man /policeman)...  ask students to complete the sentence orally: If 2 or more people come together , have fun, we name them.........( "friends" expected answer). If 2 or more words come together to form a new word, we name it as ....... ( compound nouns)  ask CQs : If 2 or more words come together, we call them .........? (wait for the answer) Is credit card a compound noun? YES Is boyfriend a compund noun? YES Is friend a compound noun? NO  give explanations .. (form) see appendix .....  pronunciation: COMPOUND NOUN ˈkɒmpaʊnd /naʊn/

Controlled Practice (13-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

 look at the text on page 46 and underline the compund nouns you see.  check your answers in pairs.  look at the board / your answer key and check if it is correct. Vocabulary  give meaning of the words using pictures. ask about form (what do we call them? compound nouns) give pronunciaton (see appendix) match words from column A with words from column B. Use dictionary to help you. (p: 47 e.g 3) check in pairs and then check from answer key given.

Freer Practice (12-15 minutes) • students to be able to use words in a sentence that they have learnt & create an event in groups. They will be be able to discuss and give reasons for their choice.

give the task:choose an envelope, read the instruction, find the hidden picture and sit . divide the class into two groups give the task : You are going to walk the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. You can take 3 or 4 objects from the photos with you. Decide together which ones you are going to take.Give reasons.(if there is time expand activity telling them they have to add 2 more words in their own.) make Ss discuss it.
