Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of relative clauses for explaining and defining words

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice using strategies for paraphrasing

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher uses a dictionary to elicit first the word "dictionary" and then "definition". This is a definition but what is the THING/PERSON..... A _____________ is a person who puts metal in your mouth and takes coins out of your pocket

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Give out text with gist question "where is this definition from?" Then three more detailed questions on HO2 (pairs, WC agree) Then YOU think of definitions for these things (write on WB a bank, a boring person, the brain, a star, a friend, a secret MATCH with definitions on HO3

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Look at the definitions and decide when we use...WHICH WHO WHERE....

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher explains the context where you need a word but you do not know it. What's best to do in this situation? 1 - panic? 2 - mime? 3 - explain in other words ? try with pictures in pairs HO4 from p126. Is it a person, place thing ? students do the exercise in HO5 where definitions are matched to pictures of people, places and things.

Controlled Practice - students guess the 6 things being described. (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

play 1.10 check instructions - there will be 6 things. play 1.11 ss listen and write down what they think...(when the beep sounds, stop if they need time) play 1.12 with answers waiter, department store, mobile phone, slim, stressed, turn off (answers on WB so everybody can be sure)

Useful expressions (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for freer practice

This HO shows different strategies for paraphrasing, some of which were in the previous stage's listening. Check in pairs and then with recording 1.13

Free Practice - info gap definitions (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

in pairs, each student receives half of the sheet of illustrated words on page 217 of the new Teacher's book. demonstrate - explain the word. But don't say it.... try to explain to your partner.
