Description

In this lesson, students learn about new collocations through guided listening and speaking exercises. The lesson starts with a discussion about friends. This is followed by a speaking activity where students work in pairs to talk about the topic and relate with. Then, the lesson focuses on meanings of collocations and finally there is a controlled practice through listening.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and give practice using collocations related to friendship

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation and to give practice in listening for specific information in the context of friends

Procedure

Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the target vocabulary and to set lesson context while engaging students

Students talk in pairs to do the 'Speaking activity 1 and 2', they talk about friends and what makes them good friends, then they share answers as an open class activity. For Speaking2, after the working in pairs activity to complete the sentences, teacher writes other ways to complete the sentences on board.

Focus on Language (10-11 minutes) • To introduce students to new lexis about friends.

Students work in pairs to put the text in the correct order then students listen to the recording to check their answers.

Controlled Practice (9-10 minutes) • To teach and test students on the target lexis

In exercise Vocabulary 3, students complete the questions with the words in bold from exercise Vocabulary 1. Teacher writes 4 more questions on white board to provide more collocations with the same verbs.

Freer Practice (19-20 minutes) • To provide students oral practice of the target language

In exercise Vocabulary 4, students work in pairs to interview each other by asking the previous questions in exercise Vocabulary 3 and they produce the target language in a freer activity.

Flexible Stage (5-7 minutes) • To deal with anticipated problems in case students finish early

Students change partners if they finish earlier than expected, teacher could also continue with error correction on white board if there is still time left.
