Going Out - Invitations
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students practice listening skills. The lesson starts with a discussion about going out with someone famous. This is followed by gist listening where students listen to two dialogues about inviting someone to do something and answer the questions. Then there is a sentence completion activity where students listen to the dialogues again for specific information. Finally, there is some controlled practice through sequencing sentences and free practice through making a dialogue and acting it out.

Materials

Abc pictures, worksheets, a listening text

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about invitations and responses.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of inviting someone to do something.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows the pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo and his Turkish look-alike and asks ss if they know those people. Then, T tells that the dream of that Turkish boy was meeting with Ronaldo and he reached his dream.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students choose a famous person and think about going out with him/her. Then, in pairs they discuss where they would like to go with this person and what they would like to do. Following this, T asks the ways we invite someone to do something and gives some examples through pictures.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks students to guess what the listening text is about. Then students listen to two conversations about inviting someone to do something and find answers to how well the people in the conversations know each other and why they are telephoning.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Studens listen to the dialogues again and complete the given sentences according to the dialogues. Then they check their answers with their partners.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T hands out the worksheets. Students fill in the speech bubbles by sequencing the sentences in the correct order. Then they check the answers with their partners. Following this, in pairs students make a dialogue using the given one as a model and act out their dialogues.
