Description

In this lesson the students will practice their reading skills reading the text about a call centre employee, learn some job-realted vocabulary and practice using it in freer speaking.

Main Aims

  • Practice reading for gist and for specific information with the text in which a call-centre employee describes her job.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of job related vocabulary in the context of speaking about the things the students think are important in a job.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the picture of a call centre and elicit the word and activate the schemata by asking questions about call centres.

Reading for gist (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task

Students read through the text quickly to find out if Rjeshwari is happy about her job as a call centre worker.

Reading for Specific Information (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Students read the text in more details to find answers to the questions. Peer-check, then check with the whole class. Clarify the vocab: "shifts", "to hire/to employ", "salary".

Vocabulary (10-11 minutes) • To elicit, introduce and activate more vocab to describe jobs.

Students work in pairs to range the sentences describing jobs. Choose the Top 5 they think are important. Elicit the Top 3 during the class feedback.

Speaking (10-12 minutes) • Activating the Jobs vocab applying it to describe their own jobs

Students work in groups to find out who in their group is the happiest about their job and why .
