Description

Students will practice describing adjectives using the comparative form and they will learn the different forms of comparative ( -r ,-er, more)They will have controlled practice, listening practice and free practice to add variety to the class activities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of Comparative in the context of Holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about deciding where to go on a holiday using comparative form in the context of Holiday

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show a picture of old and new Istanbul, to elicit adjectives and comparison between the two images. Is it Istanbul ? Which one is old ? Which one new ? Which one looks better/ you like better ? Why? Students answer .

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight TL

T will show sts a paper that has the rules of the comparative and she will ask students to read the rules . After they read, T will nominate a student to check understanding. Selma = thin becomes? Selma answers Errem = important becomes ? Errem answers After that, T will instruct students to solve the table. They will work alone and then will check their answers in pairs. T will provide an answer key as final FB

Task 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T will show sts Exercise 2 . Exercise 2 is composed of 2 sections i) and ii) before she gives instructions , T will go through the words with ss to check if they know what they mean. This will be done by going through the words one by one by eliciting. Interesting = do you remember the story about the servant in Achie's last class? Old = T will show Istanbul pictures Cheap = T will point a pen , and ask how much this cost ? then laptop ( how much this cost) Light = T will elicit by weight a paper on her hand Fat = by showing a picture of fat boy cartoon character. Then T will ask student to do exercise i) where they have to write the opposite adjectives of these words . She will ask check their answers ( since the class is small and there are only 5 words) . T will practice ICQS Do we write a sentence ? Do we do section ii? Then teacher will explain part ii) . In this part students will compare pictures using the comparative and the opposites of the adjectives . T want to expose sts on are several ways for comparison ( ex. boy "a" is taller the boy "b"/ boy "b" is shorter than boy "a") and offer them more practice time using the comparative . They will have 4 sentences and 1 example solved for them as a model. Students will check their answers in pairs then through an answer key.

Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight TL

T will introduce Monika and Luke from the recording, and she will tell them that they want to go to Thailand for holiday, but they haven't decided where to go ? Before T play the recording she will show them a picture of a temple . T will ask sts to pay attention to the names of the 2 cities in Thailand, and some of adjectives used before listening to the recording . Before handing sts the exercise , T will ask questions : What are the names of the cities mentioned ? can you remember some adjectives used ? give one example ? Then T will hand out the exercise , she will ask student to read the sentences , once they are done she will play the second part of the recording , students have enough time to write what they hear. T will provide an answer key if needed. Then she will ask students to work in pairs to do section b . Sts read section b ) which asks them to mark the sentence M or L. They will hear the recording for the second time , to see who said what .

Language Practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

T will explain now the interview exercise , the students will need to mingle in this exercise. They will ask questions ( how old are you , what time do you wake up , what is your mobile type, how far is your home from the center) . Students will fill the info on the form and then , they write 3 sentences using the comparative. Twill model: Filiz what time do you wake up ? Filiz answer Saleh, how long does it take you to come to school? T writes on the form , then she will write on her form Saleh lives farther than .... FB = Class share their answer with each other (open discussion )
