Main Aims

  • To provide student a lesson to improve their skim listening skills within the context of 19th and 20th centuries inventions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and recycle regular and irregular verbs in Simple Past Tense


Warmer/Lead-in (9-15 minutes) • To prepare student with the listening task vocabulary.

Before giving material to the students the idea of simple past and the verb forms will be recycled: Teacher writes a sentence without the verb form for the upcoming listening activity they can use. I ___ to Spain last year. CCQs: Do we remember which verb to use for the things happened yesterday? Simple Past Tense After eliciting the use of the regular verb ask for "bring" if it happened last year He _____ a computer to the lesson yesterday. Try to elicit brought: If the regular irregular elicitation fails write WB think and asked for its past CCQs: Is it "thinked" or "thought"? Do we say "becomed" or "became"? and after getting the right answer proceed with the instructions "Now we are going to fill the verbs in to the gaps in pairs if it is in the past we put the past verb. If it is in the present we put the present form." ICQs: Do I put past form here? (by showing the past column) Which form do I use here? (present column ask to Şenay) Give the hand outs and give them the time frame 5 minutes. Now you are going to match these words with their MEANING. You have 8 minutes to match them up. ICQs: Do I match them alone?/ Do I match them in pairs? Cut ups will be given to the students in pairs. Give the answer keys on paper for each table one per table.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-13 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before hand outs given to the students teacher gives the instructions: After they are done: Please stand up, and check their friends' answers. Then give one answer sheet per table. Now I want you to think about the word "invent". Does anyone remember the word? If no answers comes ask: "Who invented the light bulb?" In case: CCQ Is it something to do with technology and science? give the answer if it is about the common knowledge:"Edison invented the lightbulb. Before giving the HOs give the instructions: Ask them "do you know who invented the telephone and radio? Think about it." Write the possible answers no phones write a wrong one for yourself as well. Play the recording for gist then write the inventors to the WB.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Give the HOs and ask them :" Please fill the past simple verbs to the blanks in groups. while listening to the recording" Model the first sentence: and put invented (past form) use gesture that you will fill while listening. Monitor and collect their mistakes for the delayed error correction. After this one is done get an open class feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • Students will be provided with the chance to provide a feedback according to the listened text.

The HOs will be given to the students and asked to find true and false sentences Chest the paper and show the activity Then get a WCFB for the activity. "Please correct the false sentences with the false ones."
