Description

In this lesson, students learn about the third person singular form of verbs in present simple tense through guided discovery based on two reading texts about daily routines. The lesson starts with talking about daily activities. This is followed by reading for identifying the verbs in the texts. Then there is some controlled practice through multiple choice exercises. After the exercises, there is some semi-controlled practice based on writing a paragraph using the text as a model. Finally there is some free practice via a speaking activity

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of the present simple tense in the context of daily routines.
  • To identify the third person singular form of verbs in the present simple tense

  • To practice the pronunciation of -s / -es ending verbs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T starts the lesson with greeting ss and asking how they are. T tells that he feels hungry and he normally has lunch at that time of the day. Then he talks about his daily activites giving example sentences. T elicits some activities ss do.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T presents the third person singular form of verbs in present simple tense through the texts. T puts pictures of the daily activities that are mentioned in the texts. While ss are reading the texts, T writes the activities from the texts near to the pictures.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T asks ss to identify the verbs in the sentences. Then he asks them the difference between the verbs in Text A and Text B and elicits answers. Ss work out the rules for themselves. Following this, T gives a brief explanation.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss practice the pronunciation of /s/, /z/, /z/ sounds of the third person singular verbs in the present simple tense. T plays the recording and ss repeat the words. Following this, they do exercises which requires listening some words and putting the words under the correct coloumn. Ss check their answers with their partners.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T hands out worksheets. Ss do some multiple choice exercises based on reading a text and choosing the correct answer. Ss check their answers with their partners.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss try to guess their partners daily routine and write a text about it using the text on the coursebook as a model. Then ss check it with their partners.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss practice speaking by talking about their daily activities. Then they try to find a person whose daily routine is similar.
