In this lesson students will learn what is reported speech and when use it.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of reported speech in the context of overheard

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation and a game

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show some photos of Turkish celebrities on the WB and ask Ss to guess who are they and what are they telling each other. Then T will ask Ss to share their opinions with the WC. Ss may come up with these sentences : (I love you) Then T will say :yes, Kenan (he) said he loved me. T first try to elicit the reported sentences from Ss,if they couldn't tell them,T will show them the right ones.

Intro to grammar (10-12 minutes) • To let Ss underline to TL

T will ask Ss to read the text about overhearing people quickly and underline the sentences with told and said. T will check the possible answers with Ss. Then T will try to clarify the meaning of the reported speech here by asking Ss some CCQs. Then T will draw a chart on the WB and try to elicit the both form direct and reported speech from Ss.

controlled practice (4-6 minutes) • To check Ss understanding of TL

T will give Ss rules about reported speech statements and Ss must fill the gaps. they can work with their partner. Then T will ask Ss to check their answers with their partners and give them the answer key. T ask some CCQs if it is necessary.

controlled practice (3-6 minutes) • To practice more of the TL

T will give Ss some sentences in reported speech and they have to write down the direct speech of every one of them. then they will be asked to check them with their partners. T will check if they have problems.

Semi-controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • To give Ss the chance of using the TL

T will give Ss small cards with direct sentences on them. ask Ss first to regroup and then tell their partners the statements.their partners must reply with reported speech statement. T will monitor while Ss are using the TL.(Error correction if its necessary)

Game(Runners & secretaries) (7-9 minutes) • To practice more of the TL

T will divide class into two 4 groups,and choose one runner and two secretaries for each group. There are some cards on the WB with direct statements and runners must read them and tell them to the secretaries. The secretaries must write down the correct reported speech statements on the another card and give the runner to stick them on the WB immediately. first group who guessed all the statements right,will win the game.
