In this lesson, students students will practice using can and can't modal verbs sentences.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of modal verb can/can't for ability.

  • To provide controlled speaking practice talking about abilities


Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T will show the Ss some Turkish money and and how to say it, for example 1.50 TL= one lira and fifty, 3.25 TL= three liras and twenty-five. and can do some practice of coins. -T will give the Ss a matching activity to review the vocabularies they have studied before.

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in the coming task through reading

- T will show the students a picture of Taksim square and will ask the students : what is the name of that place. -T will show students the map of the transportation of Turkey, and will elicit some words. - T will show the students a handout and will explain for them that they are going to read the information and answer the questions (1). - T will solve the first question using the first way (underground train) - S will answer the same questions using different ways and then compare with a partner. - T will refer back to the information in the box , students will work in pairs to decide how to go to the airport and give reasons for their decision. have a class discussion about the best way to travel.

Practicing Grammar (10-12 minutes) • To get the Ss to use the TL

- T will give the each pair a map and will tell the students that they have papers under their seats and they are going to go to the places mentioned in that paper , with a certain amount of money. - Students will talk and write sentences using can/can't. - then students in groups are going to discuss the way back with the same amount of money.

Role play(If there is time) (12-15 minutes) • to practice using TL

-one Student of each pair will pick a picture of a place and card that has the picture of the vehicle they are going to use, this student will be the tourist and the other one will be the guide, the tourist will ask the guide about the directions of that place. - about how can he/she get to that place. for example: How can I go to ...(you can go by..) Can I go there by tram? Can I rent a bicycle to get there ? Can I go shopping in that place? Can I meet people from other countries? Can I food from other countries? - Students will use can / can't sentences to show the way to that place in pairs.
