Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about bureaucracy in the context of law and order

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of law related words in the context of law and order

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set the context

T will show different pictures which are related to law. T will ask Ss to tell if they know some of their names and what do they have in common.(PW/WC) Then T will elicit the names of pictures from Ss and will ask Ss some CCQs to make it more clear for them. Also T will use her own experience (being a foreigner in Istanbul, she had many things to do=red tape) to simplify the meaning as much as possible.

Controlled activity (4-6 minutes) • To teach Ss the meaning of new vocabulary

T will show students how to match the vocabulary with their meaning and divide Ss into four groups. Then T will give students 8 sentences with gaps and students have to fill the gaps based on the meaning of vocabulary which were given. T will ask Ss to check the answers with their groups and then Ss must come to the board and do the same for the sentences. T will focus on the pronunciation, part of speech and again meaning of every words.

Pre-Listening (6-7 minutes) • To make Ss ready for the listening task

T will play a video about bureaucracy which it shows how things will be done in the government departments. Ss may still have problem with the meaning of bureaucracy, but T will explain it has two meanings (one red tape, and another a person who is employed to do the work of government). Then T will ask Ss to have a look on three laws about bureaucracies and match the laws with their explanation. Ss have to do individually. Ss will be asked to check their answers with their partners. Then the answers will be shown up on the WB. (If Ss don't understand some of the words in the laws,T will explain the words but with demonstrating and asking CCQs)

While-Listening(Listening for gist) (6-8 minutes) • To provide Ss with the chance to listen to the TL

T will explain that Ss are going to listen to four conversations about bureaucracies and they have to decide which conversation refers to one of the laws in the previous activity. Ss will listen only one time, but if they still have problem with it,T will play the audio track one more time.

While-Listening(Listening for comprehension) (10-12 minutes) • To check Ss understanding of the TL

Ss have to listen again to the conversations in order to answer 4 questions. T will give Ss the questions and they have to do it individually. T will play the audio for two times. Ss have to check their answers with their partners. all the answers will be shown up on the WB.

Speaking Activity (5-6 minutes) • To check Ss understanding of the TL in terms of speaking

T will show some questions on the WB and after regrouping the Ss,will ask them to talk about the questions with their partners. T will monitor and correct Ss' errors while they are talking. If there were some serious mistakes, T will write them on the WB and ask Ss to correct the errors themselves.(if they couldn't,T would correct them)
