Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Generation Y

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of a lecture about Generation Y


Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will put the words from the first line of the lecture, jumbled, for the Ss to reorder: is a product of their time, every child, every generation and ask them if they consider it true and why. Then I will ask them to discuss in pairs what differences they can think of. I will put their ideas on the board.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1. Listening for gist. Before listening to the lecture, I will give out the handouts with questions for them to answer after they have finished listening. I will allow a minute for going through the questions before they start listening. The Ss listen. Then answer the Questions, first individually, then check in pairs (plus some feedback). 2. Listening for detail. Handouts first, set the task. They listen. Answer in pairs if the sentences are true or fals and explain why.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice the speaking skill

Discussion in pairs. Do you see yourself as belonging to a particular generation? What characterizes this particular generation? Discuss it with your partner.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Getting the feedback from the Ss. They share their ideas. Also, the teacher picks up some wrong sentences during the monitoring and puts it on the board. The Ss correct.
