Description

In this lesson, students learn about the first conditional through guided discovery based on a listening text about decisions and choices. The lesson focuses on first conditionals and aims to present the grammar and practice it.The lesson will start with a warmer intended to get students to thinking about the subject. Then at the end of the lesson students be able to use and understand the first conditional by doing a free practice.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of meaning, form and pronunication of first conditional and future time clauses

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening practice of the first conditional and future time clauses and related verbs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T will place students in groups and have students discuss three questions from the handout ( page 44 exercise 3a) -T will then have students finish that within a set time.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- T gives students an a handout (page 44 exercise B) -T are place students in two groups the Steve's and Kate's -T has students check the questions -T will play the tape machine and have students listen to the answers -T will then have the Steve's look at the answers together and Kate's look at the answers together. -T places students in pairs again and look at exercise 4a -T plays tape again and in pairs students listen and answser. -T lets students discuss their answers with other paried groups.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-T will elicit form and meaning through whiteboard demonstration and sentence review. ''If I go to bed early tonight, I'll feel better tomorrow'' ask students Ask students where is the ''if clause'' where do yo think the main clause is? do you know what is a clause? Clause is subject +verb Show students the form - ıf+ present simple, will +base verb If clause talks about possible and probable thing. -Twill again meaning through whiteboard demonstration and sentence review. Future time clauses ''I'll eat dinner tonight when I finish my homework'' we always have a main clause + time clause Main clause future and time clause we use present simple

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- T gives students the handout İf clauses ( page 45 exercise 5a,b,c) -Students check answers in groups -Students look at Handout again and look at the future time clause -Teacher drills If I start teaching again, I’lI be exhausted after a year. -Again in groups check answers.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Teacher gives students handout and students are given a set time to finish (page 45 exercise 8 ). -T places answers on the board students have to stand up and check answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-T then gives students an exercise (page 45 exercise 10) -T tellls students to mingle when their done and check their answers.
