Description

In this lesson students will learn what is reported speech and when to use it.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for making sentence with say and tell in the context of life of actors, celebrities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Listening Pa talking to actress, press conference with Jennifer Lopez in the context of Tv, celebrities,press conference

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will write 3 names of famous actors and 3 names of famous actresses. Teacher will ask students who are those people? What is their occupation? Is it difficult to be an actor or actress? What is so difficult about this job?

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a listening and text

Teacher will give students handouts with exerciese 4(page 81). Teacher will present the listening ( t will say it's a dialog between Gabi and Fiona. Gabi is a PA (personal assistant) for company that makes TV Programmes and Fiona is an actress.) Teacher will ask students to listen and fill in the gaps in sentences from ex no 4. Students will work individually , checking in pairs. Teacher will give to students answer key

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher will ask students to imagine that Gabi (PA) is talking to somebody else about Fiona. Teacherwill ask students to change sentence form ex no 4 into direct speech. Teacher will ask students to use structures : She said that/She told me that/ I told her that... Teacher will try to elicit first example . She said that /she told me that ...she couldn't to the meeting on Monday. Students will work in pairs. Teacher will give answer key to check.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher will write sentences on the board. I was in a car accident/She said that she had been in a car accident. I have already had one operation/She told me that she had already had one operation. Teacher will try to elicit what changed here? -Tenses Teacher will ask CQs and check if students understood the meaning. Below table there are two sentences with say and tell sb that. Let them read it and elicit how we do reported speech and what is the difference between say and tell. Show students that pronounce change as well . Show students time references and how they change. Give students hangout with R.Sp.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher will say that we will watch short video from press conference of Popular actress Jennifer Lopez. Teacher will ask a question to students Why She is here in ─░stanbul?/why did she come to Istanbul? Students will receive handouts from this conference. Students will be asked to change sentences into reported speech with say and tell sb that an write it as an article from press conference, as a test for interior job. After this teacher will take all articles and hang on the wall. Students will stand up read and chose the best one. Teacher will explain to Ss that they are all going to attend cocktail party. First they will seat in pairs facing each other. Give each students card with funny sentence and correct answer at the back. Students will work in pairs they will have to say sentences in correct way using reported speech.The answers will we seen by his/her partner and she will have to decide if it was correct or no.( 10 pieces per each couple). Then students will go to the board ( all wall and will read as much sentence about celebrities as possible) then will go to each other and tell the news with reported speech. They should mingle talk and mingle. After this ask students to mingle. Teacher will ask students talk about what the other said with grammar structure She /he said that or He/she told me (that) .

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher will ask students to work in pairs. Teacher will ask student to share the best day of your life. Each student talk one story then student to the same. Afterwards they mingle or switch partners and try to use reported speech while reporting friends stories. Optional you can ask what is the worst day of your life?

Error Correction (2-4 minutes) • To correct error correction

Teacher will do some error correction connected to TL.
