Practice of functional exponents speaking on the telephone

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of functional language used for speaking on the telephone in the context of common phone conversations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening for gist practice in the context of common phone conversations

Procedure

Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To get students talking and introduce the topic of the lesson.

1. Teacher asks students to look at the picture and say what the man is doing. (He is talking on the phone). 2. Teacher asks students to work with their partners and roleplay a short phone conversation for each situation. Teacher provides an example of the first conversation, gives the students handouts, gives time to look them through and ask if students don't understand any words. Students role-play the situations. 3. Teacher gets feedback.

Exposure: Listening for gist (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a recorded conversation.

1.Teacher gives students an instruction to listen to 4 recorded conversations (2.51-2.54) and answer the questions: What is the man trying to do? What happens at the end? 2.Students listen to these conversations and answer the questions in pairs. 3. Teacher gets feedback.

Language focus (13-15 minutes) • To clarify the use of functional exponents which provide practice of speaking on the phone

1.Students put he words in the correct order to make useful phrases in pairs. 3. Students listen and check the answers. (2.55) and drill pronunciation. 4. Students are asked to match the sentences 1-8 to the functions a-h, they get the meaning. 5. Students do this in pairs. 6. Teacher checks answers, clarifies register. 7. Teacher shows these sentences on the board. Teacher asks one student to come and underline the phrases that they can use in their conversations on the phone (exponents), the others are asked to help and provide some examples, exponents are highlighted for further practice.

Landuage practice (8-10 minutes) • To develop students' ability to use functional exponent which provide practice of speaking on the phone..

1.Students are asked to change their partners. 2.Students roleplay one conversation (chosen among 2 given at the start of the lesson) with the target exponents. 3.Teacher gets feedback
