Description

In this lesson students will read an article about a stuntman. In the beginning of the lesson, they will try to guess the word ‘stunt’ through some visuals. As a warm-up activity, they will talk about stunts and stuntmen. This is followed by a gist reading activity where the students are asked to find out the missing sentences in the article . Also, they will try to find the mentioned stunts. Then they are asked to complete a true/false exercise by reading the text in detail. As a post reading activity, they will discuss the dangerous events they have’ve lived through.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about a stuntman in the context of dangerous events and experiences

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of dangerous events and experiences

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher shows a few pictures of stunt scenes and ask students to discuss what they could be about. Teacher tries to elicit the 'stunt' and 'stuntman'. After eliciting the answers,teacher writes the words on the board. Clarify the meaning with Concept Check Questions: 1.Is it a dangerous action? (Yes) 2.Is doing a stunt a kind of job? (Yes) 3.How do we call the person doing stunt? (Stuntman) 4.Does a stuntman work at the hospital? (No) 5.Where can you see a stuntman? (In a film)

Pre-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher asks students to discuss what kind of actions can be considered as a stunt and write their answers on the board. After eliciting the answers, teacher highlights some of words in terms of meaning and pronunciation. This is followed by a choral drilling.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task

Teacher will give the HOs and ask students to put the missing sentences in the correct place. Teacher sets a time limit. They will carry out this task through matching. Students check their answers in pairs and then as a whole class.

While-Reading #2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with specific information reading tasks (scanning)

Teacher asks students to underline the stunts in the text and check them if they're similar with their predictions written on the board. Teacher asks them to find the different ones as well. Teacher sets a time limit for the task and checks the answers as a whole class.

While-Reading #3 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

Students are asked to carry out the true/false exercise by reading the text in detail. Teacher sets a time limit. Students check their answers as a whole class. Teacher clarifies any problems in the text and their reading skills with some questions.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students are asked to discuss any other dangerous jobs apart from stuntmen. After they discuss the other alternatives, they are asked to share the dangerous events they've lived through in groups and choose the most dangerous event. Teacher does delayed error correction as necessary.
