Description

This language focus lesson is designed to remind the students Yes/No questions and short answers of the verb "be". The context for the target language will be set through pre-teaching vocabulary and listening to a conversation. The meaning and the form of Y/N questions and short answers of verb be will be elicited and practiced via asking and answering questions with a variety of activities.

Main Aims

  • To make Ss understand and use the Y/N question form and short answers of the verb "be" through the practice of listening and grammar activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To improve Ss' listening and speaking skills via listening and speaking activities; to give Ss comtrolled speaking activity for accuracy.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set the context for the TL

1- T will project images of different occupations. - T will show the images and the words, and without any speaking, T will demonstrate students to match the words and pictures - T will distribute the handout. - Ss will be given half a minute to match, and answers will be shouted out. 2- T will project another image: Married vs. Single - I am not married. I am single. What about you? - A few Ss will be asked this question, answers will be elicited.

Pre-Listening (3-4 minutes) • To set the context for the TL

- T will project the image of Amy and Ben and ask "Who are they?" - Answers will be elicited from Ss. - T will introduce Amy and Ben, and Amy's friends Claire, Steve, Daniela and Carla.

Listening for gist (6-7 minutes) • To make the Ss improve their listening skills and to introduce the model for the grammar section

- T will project the first exercise: "Match the names and the photos. Then check with your pairs." - T will distribute the image and the exercise b. - T will play audio no.2.6. - The answers will be elicited from Ss.

Listening for details (6-7 minutes) • To make the Ss improve their listening for details skills

-T will project the second exercise (exercise c). -T will demonstrate the task "Listen and answer. Look, Karl is from Germany, and he is a doctor." - T will distribute handouts of exercise c. - T will play the audio no.2.6. - T will ask for pair check. - The answers will be elicited.

Post-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To make sure the Ss understand the listening and to introduce Y/S questions of verb "be"

- T will project the exercise 5a. - T will demonstrate the first question. - T will distribute the handouts of the exercise 5a. - Ss will be given 2 minutes to answer and discuss with their pairs. - WC feedback will be done.

Language Focus - Grammar (6-8 minutes) • To highlight the meaning and the form of the verb be in the context of Y/N questions and short answers

- T will project the first gap-fill exercise no.1 on WB - T will demonstrate the first exercise with the help of a student - Ss will be distributed the handout -Ss will be given 2 min.s to answer with their partners - Answers will be written on the board. WC feedback. - T will project the first gap-fill exercise no.2 on WB - T will demonstrate the first exercise with the help of a student - Ss will be distributed the handout -Ss will be given 2 min.s to answer with their partners - Answers will be written on the board. WC feedback.

Production of TL (5-7 minutes) • To enable Ss speak in English with the TL

- T will project the pictures of 9 people. -Ss will be asked to talk about these people Y/N questions and short forms are expected to be used. - Ss will distribute hand-outs. -Ss will talk as pairs.
