This is followed by elicitation of the present Continuous meaning and form. After they finish controlled and semi-controlled practice, some prepositions of place introduced (revised). This leads to a free practice exercise and the lesson ends by a feedback and error-correction.

Main Aims

  • To provide review, practice and clarification of The Present Continuous tense, and prepositions of place
  • To provide clarification, review and practice of The Present Continuous tense, prepositions of place in the context of Famous painting

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in an Information gap activity in the context of Describing paintings

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Anagram - the word Artist as a warm-up.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

A famous painting by Toulouse-Lautrec. Demonstrate it to the Ss and ask what is happening in the picture. Use their answers as the examples of the Pr. Cont. Tense. Put one of the sentences on the board, e.g. They are talking and drinking. Since I assume they know the form already, I will try to elicit its meaning. CCQ - When is it happening? What Tense do we use for actions happening now? How do we form the Pres. Cont. Tense? Then go through the positive, negative and interrogative forms of it.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ex. 3 p 9 - Workbook. It is also a good exercise because it introduces some prepositions of place, which we will touch upon later.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ex.1Ca p 127 SB They will do it orally.

Prepositions of place incorporation/revision (3-5 minutes) • to revise the Ss knowledge of the prepositions of place and make them ready for the free practice activity

I demonstrate an object and ask the Ss to say where it is. Change its place - they say again where it is. They do a matching exercise

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Pre-teach/revise the words they may have forgotten or don't know. statue, attendant, sculpture, audiogide. Put Ss into pairs, so that A and B can't see each other's sheets. I demonstrate the 1st one by being both A and B. Ss describe the same pictures to each other and find 7 differences. (and circle them) Check the differences orally with the class.

Feedback and error correction (2 minutes) • To check the task and correct some possible mistakes.

The feedback will consist of three parts. 1. On the task itself - to check how it was performed. 2. Possible mistakes correction. 3. Good language examples (if I collect them)
