in this lesson, students will be given sheets in which they should try to match some sentences with the chart related to the topic. after they have been tested, teacher clarifies only the meaning. afterwards, students should find the rules through the guided discovery technique. then there are two practices one control and the other is semi controlled. in the end, they should speak in their groups based on the prompters given to them.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of past speculation in the context of a missing man

  • To give students more opportunity for fluency speaking practice in the context of missing man


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will draw the picture of Bertrande of the previous reading on the whiteboard and asks students these questions? what is the name of the wife? what is the name of the husband? how long has her husband been missing? Teacher will give students HOs and they should put sentences in the right place based on the chart.

clarification (5-6 minutes) • to provide springboard for clarification of the meaning of the grammar

teacher will spot the weak areas of the grammar based on the chart/ teacher will clarify only the meaning at this stage.

Test #1 (6-8 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

teacher will give students handouts containing the a set of sentences and rules. students work in their groups find the rules through guided discovery technique.

Teach (9-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty finding the rules

teacher will identify the weak areas and tries to clarify the language as much as possible. at this stage,teacher tries to work on form and pronunciation.

Test #2 (4-5 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

teacher distributes handouts and asks students to do a multiple choice questions as controlled practice. Teacher at this stage gives them only a short time to do it. afterwards, the teacher will have quick feedback from students.

semi-controlled practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

teacher will play a video for students and in pairs practice the target language as much as possible. this is practice for accuracy. so students will be given a series of questions to ask and they should do it as they mingle in the class. therefore teacher will mover around and monitors students noticing their errors as much as possible. Afterwards, the teacher will correct their errors.
