Main Aims

  • To provide practice in gist and scan for specific information in the context of star signs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice on the vocabulary which will lead the students to feel confident in the following lesson (Başak's lesson) about the daily horoscope

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students with pictures on the WB.

The teacher has already placed pictures on the WB to set the context and asks students what they represent and elicits from students that they are star signs/horoscope or astrology. In order to create more interest and engage the students teacher will divide the class into two groups and give each group big slips of paper with the English star signs names and dates. Students all come up to the WB and try and stick their paper by the correct picture. Then teacher gives FB to check the answers and asks some students what their star sign is.

Pre-Reading/Discussion (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will be given a HO, which teacher will present through chesting before handing it to them, including questions related to the text such as: "How often do you read your horoscope? Do you believe what it says?" Teacher gets some feedback and may check some words such as " a waste of time" and "secret police" before getting the students read

While-Reading/Gist #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with gist

The students will practice reading for gist by skimming the text and choosing the best title for the article that is given in HO. Teacher gives students, individually, 5 minutes to read the text briefly. "Don't need to understand every word, just try to understand the topic and choose the best title for the text, please." The students first skim the whole text for gist and then get the general idea which will help them choose the best title for the text. The teacher checks if there is any inconsistent answer with the whole class.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with specific information and guessing the meaning.

Students scan the text for specific information. They will try to find the first words in each line of paraagraph 2 and 3. Then, in the next step, in exercise 4 in HO, students complete the sentences with the words from the text and teacher checks the understanding of the words with the examples and CCQs.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on vocabulary

Teacher first explains how to do the activity and shows a demo with a student. Then teacher gives the handouts and students mingle and ask questions each other to find who knows a famous astrologist.... is a Gemini.... etc. Teacher gets some FB.
