Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of speaking about time they spend doing things

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher welcomes students to the topic of the hour: lexis practice. The teacher directs students with the following context: Ask and answer the questions How much time do you spend chatting to colleagues at work or classmates in class? How much time do you spend traveling every day? How much time do you spend looking at your mobile phone every day? How much time do you spend doing nothing every day? The students are sent to breakout rooms, and the teacher monitors. After time runs out, the teacher provides OCFB.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The teacher has students enter the net languages platform and answer exercises 1-4 of the lexis section in groups on breakout rooms. When students finish, the teacher must check answers in generality, so as to solve questions. Students then exemplify in the chat what they just did

Teach (10-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

The students then receive the following questions from the teacher (it is part of exercise 2): 1. You ___ time DOING something, either useful or useless. 2. You ___ time DOING something useless. 3.You ___ a period of time (e.g. a day, an evening, a holiday) doing something when you do it from the beginning to the end of that period. 4.You ___ THE time when you do something to stop being bored. 5.You ___ time, when what you are doing takes time away from something else. The students are asked to provide examples of the sentences.. They must answer them in breakout rooms. While the students work, the teacher monitors. The students receive feedback

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

The teacher has students enter the net languages platform and answer exercises 5-7 of the lexis section in groups on breakout rooms. When students finish, the teacher must check answers in generality, so as to solve questions. Students then exemplify in the chat what they just did

Free practice (14-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students receive the following context: Solve exercises 1-2 of the speaking section of your net languages… What was exercise 2 about? Practice saying how you spend time doing things to your classmates in groups (focus on connected speech) While the students work, the teacher monitors. Then, a group presents, and all the class provides feedback
