Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice in the context of writing a persuasive email.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To have students analyse why we use formal emails/letters and their conventions.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will begin by sharing a link to jamboard in the group chat We will look at slides 1-4 which show various homeless people. We will go to BORs to discuss the prevelence of homless people in the country, and how we could change that problem. OCFB

Layout (5-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

Introduce the goal for the class: to write a persuasive email regarding the problem of homelessness. Slide 6 introduces an example email. Give Ss 2 minute to read the email. Ask a few CCQs to check comprehension.

Formulaic Language (10-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Working in (3x) BORs we will begin to analyse the text. Slides 6-9, match the stages with sample sentences from the email using sticky notes (2 mins) OCFB (1 min) Slide 10: CCQs to determine appropriacy and formality. Slide 11 to analyse form. CCQs to determine tenses used. Share a link to a google form which recaps the previous info. Complete form alone, then review. OCFB

Free Writing (10-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Share link to padlet in group chat. Explain to Ss that we will now attempt to write a persuasive email using the platform. Instruct Ss to follow the provided flow to write to the local member of govenment regarding the issue of homelessness. Use CCQs to confirm tone and appropriacy. Ss will have 7 minutes to write their email.

Publishing (7-7 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Ss will publish their emails in padlet. We will spend 3/4 minutes to read and review all emails. I will instruct Ss to rate their peer's emails and give them a rating using stars. OCFB and review as a group.

DEC (5 minutes) • To correct any common or key errors from the day's class

Using word I will review any errors and praise good use of language observed in the class.
