Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency in the context of shopping at a store

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for shopping at a store

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will share my Google slides and ask the following 2 questions to my Ss. 1. What do you buy at the shops? 2. When do you go shopping? I will make 30 seconds for Ss to think individually. Then, I will make Break Out rooms for Ss to discuss in pairs. After that, I will elicit some answers from Ss. Anticipated problem and solution Problem: Some Ss cannot see the Google slides. Solution: I will type the same question on the chat box. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14lIGq4BnQ-d-a_raIJEjiXAP7ANDYwZL-s2THzgz5W0/edit?usp=sharing

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss will listen the text once, and change in the order you hear from. (a-e) a Here's your change and your receipt. b Anything else? c Can I help you? d How much is this map? e Would you like a bag? Ss will think the answer individually(not more than 1 minute). Then, Ss will check their answers in pairs. I will use private messages on the box. After that, I will elicit answers from Ss. CCQ: Do you have your change before you pay? - No. Do you ask 'how much' after you pay? - No. Anticipated problem and solution Problem: Some Ss don't answer the question because they couldn't listen to. Answer: I will put the text again, or I will send the text file to the student.

Clarification (12-14 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

<Meaning> I will ask my Ss to match sentences to correct marks. How much is this map? - 2 Asking about prices - b You I'll have this one, please? - 1 Saying what you want - b You Here you are. - 4 Giving something - a Sales assistant Can I help you? - 3 Supporting a customer - a Sales assistant I will give Ss 1 minute to think, and Ss will share your ideas in pairs. Ss will use the chat. After that, OCFB. CCQ: Does sales assistant know the price? - Yes Do you give money to the sales assistant? - Yes. <Appropriacy> I will ask Ss to choose formal sentences from 2 sentences. I'll have this one, please? / I wanna have this one, okay? Hey, how much is this bag? / Excuse me, how much is this bag? Can I help you? / What's up, man? I will let Ss to send their answers on the chat, then, I will nominate some Ss to check understanding. Ss use private chat to share their answers. CCQ: Do you say 'hey' to the teacher? - No. Do you hear 'What's up?' from the sales assistant? - No. <Form> I will ask Ss to match 2 sentences to the correct form (a-b) How much is - this map? How much are - these lamps? Can I help you? - Do/Can/Will +action I'll have this one, please? - I/You + can/will + action I will let Ss to send their answers on the chat, then I will nominate some Ss to check understanding. Ss use private chat to share their answers. CCQ: Does 'these maps' mean one map, or more than 2 maps? - More than 2 maps. Do we ask 'I can have this one?' in letters? - No. <Pronunciation> 1 Can I have for stamps for Europe, please? 2 How much is this map? 3 I'll have this one, please? 4 Here you are. I will play the CD, so Ss will listen carefully. Then, I will pronounce two types of stress in one sentence. Ss will choose which one is correct, and I will elicit the answer. (Ss will share their answers in pairs in private chat.) After that, I will pronounce these sentences once individually, and Ss drill the pronunciation chorally twice. (It's up to my pace.) Anticipated problems and solutions Problem: Some Ss said wrong answer, and I can get correct answer from different student. Solution: I will allow learners 30-40 secs self-check. Problem: The pace is too slow in language clarification. Solution: I won't make Break Out rooms for students in each category, because it needs time. I will mainly use private chat or chat in this content. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14lIGq4BnQ-d-a_raIJEjiXAP7ANDYwZL-s2THzgz5W0/edit?usp=sharing

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will do the role play in controlled practice. I will make Break Out rooms for Ss to talk. Ss will decide... - who will be a guest, and who will be a shop assistant - the situation (e.g. car store, supermarket, shopping mall..) I will encourage my Ss to use at least 3 sentences for each role. (Shop assistant) (Guest) - Can I help you? I'll have … , please? - It's …. yen. How much is it? - Thank you. Here you are. I will do this activity with my puppet first to demo for Ss. I will monitor them, after that, OCFB. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14lIGq4BnQ-d-a_raIJEjiXAP7ANDYwZL-s2THzgz5W0/edit?usp=sharing

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will set a real shopping situation for Ss. Ss will buy something in Starbucks! I will do this activity with my puppet fast to demo. After that, I will make Break Out rooms for Ss. I will type two roles in the chat box. 1. Let's try to buy more than 2 drinks! 2. All group members should buy drinks, so we should change our roles. I will monitor them, and I will do this activity with someone in the class in OCFB. I will find problematic items. If not, I will do this activity with my puppet again and make common mistake. I will ask CCQ for Ss. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14lIGq4BnQ-d-a_raIJEjiXAP7ANDYwZL-s2THzgz5W0/edit?usp=sharing
