intermediate level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about emergency situation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification in the context of worst case scenarios

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show my Ss the pictures to discuss the following 2questions. 1. Have you ever experienced a nature disaster like this? 2. If you were in this situation, would you be able to handle it? And why? I will ask Ss to discuss these questions in pairs in BreakOut rooms https://jamboard.google.com/d/1KazVeu8Dvqls3MjPCyJGIRiPj3PC3v2kp2xSHKO28VM/edit?usp=sharing

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will ask my Ss to read the sentences and answer the following questions. 1. Matt was the sort of man to ANTAGONISE people. CCQ: Was Matt man to aid people or irritate people? 2. A nurse cleaned and bandaged the WOUND. CCQ: Did nurse bandage the damage, or the dirty? Form I will elicit forms from Ss. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/18lVfjT3kWLLqlTw215of7lt-pAE_0A063BMlq5thN60/edit?usp=sharing

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask Ss to read the text quickly and set a gist task - "Match a title for the text". I will let students read and answer the questions individually. After that, I will make BreakOut rooms for students to check in pairs before open class feedback. https://forms.gle/2fjFqP8LqXXeuSNL7

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will ask Ss to answer the following 5 questions. They will write their answer in Google form. And I will encourage Ss to answer in their own words rather than using the sentences in the text. I will make BreakOut rooms, so they can check their answers in pairs. https://forms.gle/2fjFqP8LqXXeuSNL7

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will write down the following discussion topics on the chat box. 1. Do you ever worry about 'worst case scenarios' like this text? Which of the situations would you find most frightening? 2. What skills are needed to overcome worst case scenarios, do you think? 3. What kind of disasters most frighten you? Why? I will let Ss into BreakOut rooms to discuss the topics. I will conduct feedback on the task. DEC
