Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed readings in the context of family.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product, a short-written text about each students' family members.

Procedure

Lead-In (3-4 minutes) • To get the students be familiar with the context

T shows S two videos of two different animated series: "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons". Then, he asks them about the characters and what is the mutual point between the two tv series to get the answer "Family". Then he asks a few questions about the family concept such as the name of family members in the language. In the end he asks about the characters in one of the videos(e.g. "who is the father?", "who is this?").

Pre-vocabulary (5-10 minutes) • To elicit the words that are in the reading text.

T gives a HO #1 to the class. They need to do the word and picture matching in pairs and they have 3 minutes. In the end T teaches the words that Ss don't know.

Prediction (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text

T gives HO #2 and shows the picture. He asks students what they see on the picture and what the topic might be. They discuss in pairs.

Reading for the gist (2-3 minutes) • To get a general undestanding of the text.

T divides Ss into two groups, give the group 2 HO #3 and asks them two questions and give them 1 minute to answer. For the group 1:" Where do Chernenkos come from?" , for the group 2: "How many children do Tracy and Pete Lewis have?"

Reading for specific information (5-7 minutes) • For students to find specific information within the text.

The lecturer tells Ss some numbers that are in the text and asks them what do they mean. All the students must take notes for this activity. They have 3 minutes for this activity. In the end the groups get mixed and they tell each other about what their numbers mean in pairs.

Comprehension (5-7 minutes) • For students reading the text in depth.

T gives HO #4 to Ss and tells them to do the matchings in pairs.

Post-reading (8-10 minutes) • To enable students to produce expressions

T asks Ss to introduce their family members with the information of how old they are, what they like, what they do and where do they prefer to go with their family. In the end, they tell each other about what they wrote.

Substitute Exercise • Using the time left until the end of the lesson

If I need some extra activity, I can tell the students to play "Touch something that is..." . In this game I will ask them to touch something that is, for example; blue, made of glass etc.
