Description

Last session, negative, affirmative, and interrogative past tense was introduced and practiced. In this lesson ed endings in the past tense form of regular verbs is going to be introduced and practiced. The Ss are also going to practice speaking about events in the past in relation to their schooling. Next session, they are going to learn some vocabulary related to schooling and practice the new words through a reading exercise.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and give practice pronuncing ed endings in the past tense form of regular verbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To help Ss practice speaking about events in the past, particularly in relation to their schooling.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask the Ss to make a circle. T will demonstrate the activity, then chest the HO and ask ICQs: what are you going to write in the right column? What auxiliary do you use to form the questions? Then T will ask the Ss to mingle and do the activity. T will get FB and then the Ss will sit down.

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will write 'cook', 'open', and 'need' on the board, elicit their past tense forms from the Ss and write the phonemic descriptions of -ed below each verb . T will elicit other examples for each category. T will pronounce each verb and use fingers to indicate each syllable.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will chest the HO and explain the activity, ask ICQs: Does 'washed' have an extra syllable? What about 'weeded'? After doing the activity, T will ask the Ss to check their answers with partners then she will play the recording for the Ss to check their answers. CCQs: I will give you the base form of the verbs I want you to say the past tense forms: clean/ cleaned, , pick/picked, want/ wanted, weed/weeded, decide/decided, include/included.

Review and Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • Prepare students for free practice

T will chest the HO and explain the activity. T will ask ICQs: Is the spelling of the words correct? How many pictures are there? How many words are there? Is there one picture for each word? What should you do with the pictures? T will get WCFB.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will chest the HO and explain that Ss should read the questions and prepare themselves to talk about their favorite teachers. ICQs: Can you take notes? Are you going to write the answers? Are you going to talk with your partners? How much time do you have to think about the answers? After 2 minutes, T will divide the class into groups and ask them to take turns and tell the people in their groups about their favorite teachers. T will walk along the classroom and monitor the activity. Then, T will ask two students to tell the class about their favorite teachers.

wrap up (5-6 minutes) • to review the past tense form of the verbs with the focus on pronunciation

T will chest the HO and explain that Ss should listen to the song and fill in the gaps using the base form of the verbs in the parentheses.
