In this lesson, the students learn how to talk about relationships with family and friends. The lesson starts with an exercise introducing some vocabulary which is followed up with a speaking practice on the same subject. Then they will read a passage about two families.

  • To provide scan and gist reading exercises using a text about Mother Love in the context of family


Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • to set lesson context and engage Ss

T will show the Ss how to make name cards to get to know the Ss' names. While writing their names T will draw a family tree on the board to pre-teach the family words and elicit some family lexis.

Pre-Speaking (7-9 minutes) • to prepare Ss to talk in the context of family

T will chest the HOs, explain how to match the words to their definitions, and do the first one as an example. Then T will ask ICQs: How many words are there in the box? How many definitions are there? What are you going to do with the definitions and the words in the box? T will monitor the Ss doing the activity. WC FB T will ask CCQs: Is your aunt male or female? Is your nephew male or female? what about your niece? T will do WCFB,

Speaking (7-8 minutes) • To enable the Ss talk in family context

- T will ask the Ss to work in pairs, write the names of 4 people important to them and tell their partners about them. - T will walk along the class and monitor the activity. - T will ask 2 or 3 Ss to talk about their partners' families or friend.

Reading exercise 1 (3-4 minutes) • Practicing scan reading

- T will chest the HO, point at photo and articles, and ask Ss to read the articles and match them with photos. - T will ask ICQs: How many photos are there? what are you going to do with the photos? Should you read the articles quickly or slowly? Do you know to know the meaning of all the words? - T will monitor the Ss. - T will get WCFB.

Reading Exercise 2 (8-10 minutes) • To practice detailed reading

- T will chest the HO, point at the articles and ask the Ss to read them again and answer the questions. - Ss will check their answers with their partners. - T will do a WCFB.

Post reading activity (7-8 minutes) • To practice speaking

- T will ask the Ss to put away the HOs, work in groups of 4 and make notes of what they remember from the articles and raise their hands as soon as they are finished. The group that finishes first will be the winner. - T will ask ICQs: Are you going to write long senteces? - T will ask the speaker of the first group to tell the class about the articles.
