Description

During the day, students will learn some adjectives with their antonyms and some prepositions of place. In this lesson, through speaking and writing activities, they will have the opportunity to practice what they will have learnt.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy, fluency and written production in the context of houses and house-swapping.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students controlled, semi-controlled and free practices of prepositions of place and adjectives to make descriptions of places or buildings.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet the students. To revise the aforementioned prepositions, give Ss the lead-in handout and ask them to put the materials to the right places according to the instructions in the paper in two minutes. After they complete, ask them to check with their peers, elicit answers from peers, and then give them the lead-in handout answer key for them to check if their answers are correct.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

Before you give the Ss the Finding a Home-Exercises handout, show them the sheet. For each section of the exercise, give your instructions one by one. Set a time limit each time, make them read answer alone but check their answers with their peers. After they check, elicit the answers by appointing Ss. If you need an answer key, the name of the document is Finding a Home-Answers. If there is still time, give Ss the Kelly's House handout, ask students to read and answer in three minutes. Then make them peer check and elicit answers.

Pre-task Activities (12-14 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Give Ss the My House-Questions handout, ask them to answer the questions while you're reading. Then begin reading the My House-Text. Before you start reading for the second time, tell Ss to write down the nouns, adjectives and verbs they hear. Use ICQs: What is a noun, what is an adjective, what is a verb; elicit some answers for each questions, give examples if needed. And start reading the text. You'll read the text one more time, but this time ask Ss to write down more information as they listen. After all these, put them into groups of three or four, give them blank sheets, tell them to gather and share their information and write the paragraph they listened to three times. Appoint one student from each group to write as they share their ideas. Give them five minutes. Use ICQs: Do you work alone? - No, you work with your group; How many people writes? - Only one person writes. When they finish writing, give the groups the My House-Text so that they can compare their paragraphs with the original one.

Productive Task(s) (14-16 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Right before the task, show Ss a short video explaining house-swap -What is a Home Exchange Vacation. Then show a photo of a beautiful house -My Dream House- and describe it. Then ask them "Do you want a holiday in my house?". After getting some answers, tell them write their own dream homes. Tell them to use adjectives, say how many rooms there are in it, where it is etc. Then, according to the explanations given in Straightforward Ss and Ts Books, ask them to tell their homes at least to three other people in class before deciding to change the houses with someone for a holiday. If needed, demonstrate the activity before they start. Use ICQs: Do you talk to one person? - No, you talk to three or more people; Do you change your houses? - Yes, you do. If Time If there is time left, ask Ss to write about their own houses. Then ask them to tell their houses to each other without looking at what they will have written.

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Give Ss the Feedback Quiz. Ask them one by one what the related preposition is. If necessary, tell them again the difference between near and next to, on and over, under and below etc.
