Teaching Practice 7
To provide clarification and practice of 3rd conditionals in the context of regrets.
To provide accuracy based productive skill speaking practice while using 3rd conditionals in the context of regrets.
Procedure (38-52 minutes)
Put up the poster of the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Ask them if anyone has seen it. Ask them to watch the movie clip and try to summarize what that clip is about. Show the movie clip from the film Benjamin Button using conditionals. Have them try to come up with a summary of the clip working in pairs. Elicit some of the answers.
Give out handouts with the transcript from the video with the TL highlighted. Have them read the second paragraph of the transcript. Try to elicit the type of grammar used in this sentence.
Project the Model sentence on the board. Elicit Meaning. Ask CCQ to make sure that students understand the meaning correctly. Elicit Form from the students. Do some pronunciation drills to ensure the students aren't making any errors with pronunciation of 3rd conditional phrases.
Give instructions for the HO with the gap-fill controlled practice for 3rd conditionals. Give out the HOs and let students complete the excercise individually. Let them check their answers in pairs. Project the Exercise on the WB and do WCFB, doing some re-clarification or pronunciation drills based on the students' answers.
Give instructions for the HO with the semi-controlled practice with 3rd conditionals. Give out the HOs and let students complete the exercise in pairs. Project the Exercise on the WB and do some quick WCFB. Do pronunciation drills and error correction based on the students' answers.
Put the students in pairs, ideally one male and one female each. Project the picture of the couple arguing in the car. Tell them they are going on a road trip but they are lost. They have to blame each other for getting lost using third conditionals. Do a demo. Do error correction for any errors collected during monitoring.
Divide the class in two. Write a sentence with a 3rd conditional on the WB. The students of each group must run to the board and write one sentence using the main clause of the sentence on board as a model. The group which manages to write one sentence each first wins (as long as their sentences are grammatically correct). Do some error correction on board.
