Main Aims

  • To provide a quick review for narrative verb forms with emphasis and clarification on Past Perfect Continuous.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency focused speaking (productive skill) practice in the context of urban legends using the TL. This will be followed by some error correction on the WB.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project the board of the fish and ayran on the whiteboard. Tell them you love to have these together. In fact, | had that meal yesterday. Should I go the hospital. Elicit reactions from the class. Explain that there is no medical basis for this belief. It's just an urban legend. Give out the handouts about urban legends on the board. Have them answer the projected questions. Project pictures of three urban legends on the WB. Have the students discuss in pairs the story for each picture. Elicit some responses then get students to listen to recording 4.1. Quickly have them summarize each story.

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Chest HO testing the students the students knowledge of narrative verb forms. Tell them the sentences there are related to the stories they just heard. Individually they will solve the gap-fill grammar exercise then they will check their answers in pairs. Then they will check the answer key to the back of the page.

Teach (7-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Plan A: If everyone gets the test right, then move right to the slide, and elicit the right tense for each timeline. Plan B: If a significant portion of the students makes mistakes in the test then give the students the guided discovery handout. Let them solve it then check their answers in pairs. This is followed by clarification on WB of different narrative verb forms.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Give out the HOs in which students will practice the TL. Have them check their answers in pairs. Give out the answer key so students can check their answers.

Productive skill (speaking) practice using the TL (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Half the Students will get the orange handout. Half will get the blue handout. The students must read the handout and remember the story. They can take notes. Then afterwords they must tell a student with a different colored handout about the urban legend they just read. Speaking extension: if a pair of students finish early then they must tell each other about an urban legend they know. Errors will be collected from the students and some error correction will be made on the WB.
