Description

In this lesson students will learn about functional language that is used in phone conversations and inquiries. They will do speaking practice using the functional language that they studied.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of functional language that people use in formal conversations and inquiries over the phone.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice using the functional language that is introduced in this lesson through simulated phone conversations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in plus Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Distribute the HO with the questions about the audio that students will listen to. Elicit some information about the conversation from the pictures on the handout. (formal vs. unformal; polite language vs. casual language.) Tell them to listen to the audio and answer the questions. Give out the handout with the transcript of the phone conversation. Let them check their answers in pairs. Get one student to get on the whiteboard to right his\her answers, correct if needed.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Give out a HO modified from Ex2. Ask them to solve then check their answers in pairs. Give out the answer sheet. Give you a HO modified from Ex 3. Ask them to solve it in pairs. Give out the answer sheet. Do pronunciation drills.

Clarification (6-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Give out a handout with the target functional language with the form. Ask for alternative sentences, introduce informal language.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Tell them to remove the HO with complete text. Give out the HO. Assign each student as either Yusuf or Clare. Have the students read out the conversation and use correct phrase in the gaps. Have the students switch roles and repeat the exercise. (if there is time available) Do some error correction if you can detect some errors while monitoring.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Do a demo of the semi-controlled telephone conversation. Ask some ICQs (Are you going to look at the text you have? No) Re-group the students so pairs are sitting back-to-back. Handout the role play roles from ex.5a for students and let them roleplay the telephone conversation in pairs. Handout ex 5b and repeat the exercise.
