Özgür Biçer - Free Time Activities, Simple Present
To give Ss practice in speaking for accuracy & fluency in the context of typical friends and free-time activities.
To give the Ss controlled & semi-controlled practice of simple present yes/no questions. To consolidate & give Ss the opportunity to practice free time vocabulary.
Procedure (40-48 minutes)
Ss will be given a paper about their main information with blanks to fill in. Ss will complete the task and a whole class feedback will follow.
This will be a controlled activity. Ss will be given a handout including free time activity vocabulary. Initially, a drill practise will be done with the Ss to demonstrate how a yes/no question is formed, finger highlighting and back-chaining will also be included into the process. After eliciting some answers from Ss, they will do a pair-work or group-work(according to the number of students) with the handout given. While they are speaking, I'll be monitoring and taking notes of good language usage and mistakes for the feed-back section.
This time it will be a semi-controlled activity. First I'll drill the questions and answers with the students, then I'll elicit some answers from the students about the activities they like to do with their friends. After that I'll put them in pairs to ask and answer the questions. If the activities finish earlier than expected, according to the questionnaire which will be done as a pre-task activity is going to in the process again; they will be reminded about that and I'll want them ask the questions to the other students, and if there is still time they will write their partners' answers and give it to another student, he/she will read the answers and the whole class will try to guess who it is. While they are speaking, I'll be monitoring and taking notes of good language usage and mistakes for the feed-back section.
The examples of good language usage and mistakes will be noted by myself. I'll first appreciate good language usage by writing it on the board. After that I'll write the sentences with errors and the corrected sentences on the board at the same time, then I'll ask them to find the correct one. At last, I'll ask them what is learnt during the lesson.
